Birthday
It was my birthday today. The universe had some very strange "gifts" lined up for the occasion. I found some of my old too small lingerie last night and it fits again. Also came across another veil and a slinky black negligee I'd forgotten I owned. Blessed be. Clean out one's closets and one never knows what surprises are hidden there.

Next up the laptop I've been using cratered again by 8:30 in the am today. it was about the fourth time in one week that the mouse would work but the keys themselves weren't connecting to the electrons they herd across the screen. Called my supervisor and left a voicemal after rebooting several time to no avail. I asked if I could judt transfer the data by disk to the company's network so I had a chance to get all the indexing done by deadline. While I was waiting for his call back I booted up the PC sitting at my workstation and disassembled then reassembeld the laptop. Both units came up and were operating as they should. My cellphone rang and it was my supervisor. Two directions - do the data transfer but meet him at his office at 1 pm to pick up a replacement laptop. There still seemed to be an issue with having the data on the network. Instead of indexing he wanted me to start the preparations for analyzing the collection instead.

I called one of the inhouse techs because all non-standard data transfers need to be supervised through them - a virus check and such. He said he'd be by shortly so I started preparing for the transfer. Opened the "my documents" folder through the startup menu and realized that there was a document listed there that I had no knowledge of existing. Nice gift - Happy Birthday to you two. The tech arrived just then and I showed him what I had found. He said that the only way that document could appear as having been opened on my account was if someone had opened it through my account. Had I given anyone my password? No. Well was I certain I had locked the account whenever I had left my desk. Yes and the only time I was away from my desk for any substantial amount of time was when I went to the chiropractor yesterday - 45 minutes. Otherwise I haven't taken lunch breaks this week. Well you probably forgot once when you took a powder room break. Right that could be, but it doesn't address the core issue of someone getting on my unit in that short period of time and opening a document that wasn't that easy to locate to begin with. Oi.

Completed the data transfer by 10 am and started as quickly as I could with creating the tools I would need to do the analysis. Realized I needed to do a visual count and ananlysis of what was left in the fileroom. Met my tech there and we had further discussion about election planning. He said "if" the chance to go to Ottawa for training was afforded him he thought it would really help a lot for his tasks. I was a little thrown by the "if" until I got home and checked news sources. The bill about ame sex marriage is scheduled to be tabled next week. Minority government and strong opposition strategy might force an election before his training time was scheduled at the end of February. Happy Birthday, three. Where am I going to find the time to find an office. See I knew there was a reason to get the cataloguing finished by the end of the month. Oi too.

Stepped into the kitchen at about 11:30 am to get some coke and met the liaison there. She seemed very stressed and started peppering me with questions. She said she needed me to show her something "right now" in the operations fileroom. What culd be thrown away was a big issue for her and she seemed really pressed to get resolution on it immediately. It appeared that the message about having to be compliant with Canadian law had finally sunk in and was forcing a change of direction to her original intentions or at least directions from home office - located in another country. She allowed that legal counsel was likely going to be necessary. Not really but whatever. There are a lot of firms in the city who have specialists in that area so I mentioned that trying to be calming. No none that she found acceptable. Fine. Spent about half an hour with her in the fileroom showing her what she felt she needed to assess personally. It seemed to make her more stressed. Could I provide an analysis of the entire collection to her by the end of the day? Well there is still another 20 to 25% of the collection to index but I can pull a preliminary report together by then. Hsppy Birthday four.

I was calculating the time away from the office to meet my supervisor and hoping I was going to be able to pull it off. Rushed through the rest of the prep work and headed off to his office building arriving just on time. He was waiting for me and ushered me into their boardroom where he had the "new to me" laptop set up. He showed me how to set up and take down but the other issue made me somewhat distractible and my appointment to get new contact lenses isn't until tomorrow. I can see well enough to index but much more is a bit of a challenge. Headache beginning behind the eyes. Happy Birthday, five. I explained about the conversation I had just had with our liaison and one other incident that was fairly serious that I had overheard as I was trying to finish up the analysis preparation sans headphones. He wasn't happy with the interaction between the liaison and me. I should have referred her to him for those questions. Well first he couldn't have responded to any of the ones about the physical assessment of the colection that she needed. The other questions arose in the cours of walking her through what was there. I'm psychic when it comes to family - maybe but I can't anticipate or stop someone from asking things out of the blue. He told me to get every request from her on paper for my own protection. I can understand that but dealing with someone in crisis mode - theirs - sometimes obviates that strategy. No one documents more than I do as far as I know so I didn't need the lecture.

Headed back to the office grabbing something to eat on the way. My youngest had packed another sandwich for me but that had long since been devoured - stress relief don't you know, carbs are calming right? Arrived back at 2 pm and created the one spreadsheet I felt would best illustrate most of what I had been asked to do. Done by 3:15 then analysis of the data itself to crunch out the statistics to support the spreadsheet. And it's 3:45 pm. Another 15 minute creating the email - cc'd to my supervisor by his request - to send with the stats and the spreadsheet and off it went to the liaison. Don't like doing that kind of analysis on the fly like that - no margin for error in it, but no other options.

One of the head finance people walked up to my station as I hit the send button. Could I advise her on some retention issues with respect to her responsibilities. Had my supervisor asked people to test me out? I noted that finance was not one of my areas of expertise but questioned her a bit about exactly what was contained in her documents - finance is a very big area and the statutes and regulations governing are like a massive spider web- welcome to my parlour said the spider to the fly. I didn't feel like the spider at that point in time. Sounded as though what she did would have to comply with our security laws plus the country the company is founded in plus maybe a couple of international statutes. I told her I would do wome research over the evening and try to have an answer for her next day. Happy Birthday six and seven.

Popped in to see the liaison to give her a copy of an article on retention legislation that had appeared in our newspaper last week and to check if what I had sent would tide her over for the day. Yes that was fine. Headed out the door at 4:30 knowing that some of my sons would be waiting at home for me to help celebrate my birhtday, not waanting any thing to block my time with them. Other than the research now on my plate both from the one woman and my supervisor and the reports that would have to be sent to him from hme. Oi and Happy Birthday whatever.

Numbers three and five sons brought their girlfriends along while number six did some of the organizing of supper. The girls started talking about female problems because the one had really needed help the night before when they had visited her kitten of choice. So much cramping she couldn't function. My son had brought her over mostly because the boys hate that kind of issue being raised and also because he knew I likely had some herbal meds that would help her. They worked really well for her and that was the discussion. My guys were whining about the subject being raised so I just said it was revenge for all the times they stole my tampons to use for star wars weapons in their younger days. We girls have to stick together sometimes. Since it was my birthday I also got to tell more stories on them - their girlfriends were amused and we had a good evening together. I really like both young ladies and hope they become keepers for my guys. Happy sons and daughters in law would be the best birthday present any mom could want - right dear diary?

After they left the research and "paperwork" just finished up now. night dear diary
