Salvation
When it is this hot for so long water becomes a major topic for discussion from a variety of angles. The big debate now is whether there is any real merit to commercially bottled water. I suppose, if one owns the company. Even convenience is tough to argue when one can buy canteens and other easily carried water storage units. They're recyclable after all. It used to be a sign of serious "cool" to be seen with a battered canteen. Meant one had done some real wilderness survival time.

At the same time, there is now a debate about the damage that those disposable water bottles are creating in our environment. On the other side of the world there is a continuous struggle to find ways to make contaminated water suitable for drinking. It is as though the two halves of a single problem were set out to see if the world's population could act collaboratively for it's own salvation. Yes I know, cut to the chase. This article describes how clean, discarded, clear disposable bottles and solar energy are combined to make polluted water potable - safe for drinking. The major problem for communities using them is that there are not enough bottles available for families needing them to ensure their clean water needs are met. The use of this basic practical application of technical knowledge also would significantly reduces the pollution created by the burning of kerosene as the alternate form of decontaminating their water. So if Western nations wanted to provide one huge humanitarian gift to countries struggling with finding enough safe water to drink, as well as reduce the medical and human costs that the failure to do so incurs, then the simple solution is to pack up all those empties and send them, free of charge, - pay it forward or build up good samaritan/karma points - to those countries ensuring delivery directly to families who really need them. We could even likely find it in our hearts to provide the three drops of iodine per litre of water that would destroy residual bacteria (leave for an hour) for best results. Could it be any simpler with a bit of compassion and kindness. "The life you save may be your own".
