Heritage Station
Happy 18th Birthday HRH Beatrice.

It was Heritage Day today in Alberta. I celebrated by making "from scratch" French onion soup. No, I don't know of any French heritage in my background although I can speak it, but darned if I'm going to make haggis or bangers. Most provinces celebrate Heritage Day, but not all meaning it isn't statutory for work purposes. There were all sorts of events held downtown to celebrate our diversity, but once again - remember Canada Day - residents from this part of the city found that access into the downtown was restricted because train service stopped on the north side of the river. Those who find walking a mile or two or who find multiple transfers between public transit difficult would have been out of luck. Ditto for those like my son who worked late into the evening only to find upon trying to return home that there were no trains downtown at all. At midnight my oldest was calling asking me to check what alternatives had been set up to account for all the shift workers stranded like him. He was at a shuttle bus point by city hall with a lot of other people waiting and hoping there was still service. What it meant for a lot of them, including my son, is that they would not be able to make the connections to the feeder busses that would actually take them home. Sunday service you see. Most shift workers are relatively poor. Most don't have vehicles waiting for them in the parking lots by the train stations and a lot don't have the cab fare necessary to get them from the train station home either. They walk. Thank you, very much city council.

In the news today some interesting star stories. August meteorite showers right now - the Perseids - but with the full moon in Aquarius due on the 9th it is really difficult to see them. This was NASA's advice for dealing with the barrier. An early morning Venus Mercury conjunction on the cusp of Cancer and Leo at the height of the Perseid showers on Friday plus a Sun/Neptune opposition could make for an interesting weekend. Right now solar storms are producing auroras right down into the south of Colorado for our viewing pleasure.

Positive news was this story about giving the homeless population a bit of a leg up literally and this one about the big names in computers banding together to set up a site where we technopeasants can go to find out what and how to deal with bad ware. This bit of information from the intelligence agencies out of Australia was very disappointing. Charitable status and privileges should never be abused for any reason. It puts at risk the help desperately needed by so many humans these days. To hide behind a relief fund for civilians caught in bloody civil strife in order to perpetrate crimes is cowardly and disgusting. In the original movie the Dead Zone the crooked politician is finally unmasked for what he is when he holds a baby in front of him in order to avoid being shot. None of us wants to be shot down in cold blood but very few people would risk the life of an infant in exchange for our own life would we? That is what this so-called charity was doing.

It's very hot again today and will be for at least the balance of the week. Added in to the house cleaning yesterday it means my lungs are in full revolt - inflamed and sore. Guess that means I need to get more sleep so the body can heal.
