Walking a mile in those shoes
My youngest, the cats, and I just watched "Walk the Line" about Johnny Cash and June Carter. I have to admit it was difficult for me to sit through and I'm glad I wasn't at a theater. Why? Well first there was the emotional abuse through the childhood and the trauma. Then there was the drug and alcohol abuse as an adult male and everything that goes with it. Having lived with someone that went through similar trials in their life - well it triggered some very raw emotions. Although I can understand the choices he made, I also know what it feels like to be on the receiving end of that kind of anger. I was pleased with the way Mr Cash's first marriage was dealt with and that his first wife Vivian and her children weren't made out to be villains. I think I'll think about the rest of the story later. In some ways it echoed the story line of Ray - Ray Charles - only with a country and western theme instead of the rock and roll/rhythm and blues. What surprised me was the close connection to Elvis in the early days, through Sun records I guess. I hadn't realized that Sam Phillips had recorded them both. Strange how different two careers could be, yet how similar elements of their lives were. Both serving in Germany and making commitments to their spouses at that time. I guess there is a lot about touring that I don't understand, but I guess any long periods of separation with one spouse constantly being in the public eye would be very hard on a marriage. Don't know. I also hadn't realized that the successful marriage proposal to June had been on stage in Canada - in London, Ontario of all places. It was probably in the news but that was back when I was still small and it wouldn't have been much of an issue for me to consider. What I know about that London is that it hosts the Stratford on Avon Shakespeare festival each year. We were still celebrating Canada's 100th year as a nation and that was much more to my liking. That was also the year I really began to delve into both Egyptian and early English history. Maybe I was only allowed the E encyclopedia tht year. Just kidding. It was the story of King Canute commanding the sea to retreat that first caught my interest you see.

Otherwise today was quiet - just the start of planning how to clean up the rest of the house methodically. I hate methodical, but I do know I'm good at it when I choose to be. Just have to pretend I'm my own client I guess. Checked some of the job listings at various websites and sent out a few resumes. One of the jobs would really be interesting just because I'd actually be paid to write. Hardly seems right somehow but I would love to make my living that way. When I was surfing the web I came up with this writing contest/workshop for mystery writers whose focus is the southwest US. I don't think I've got enough background to write about both the SW US and the aboriginal community there too, although there is a connection between the Navajo - Dineh (the people) and the Dene (the people) who live in the Northwest Territories. Many of their legends and myths about how the world was created and how the tribes were split up and travelled to different lands to re-establish their homes after the last destruction of civilization on earth are very similar. Hmmmmmmmmmm. I think I have enough storyline in my posts to you to create a mystery story but I have never been able to solve one of the real ones on my own. I'd have to make something up to reveal the bad guys and gals - oh wait that's what fiction is. Maybe so but I think that great mystery readers have a feel for someone who really knows their writing craft and someone like me who can't see a trap coming until I'm caught in the middle of it. The sponsor of the writing contest/workshops is Tony Hillerman and his conference in New Mexico features a lot of very high profile writers as well. I love Mr Hillerman's stories about how Officer Chee solves his assignments using a blend of spirituality and good police work to track his killers. The Mole People actally scared me because it has elements in it that are connected with what I sometimes deal with and I loved Thief of Time because of it's focus on the technical practices of archaeology - something else I would love to be able to do - especially with the new finds of lost civilzations in Egypt - more tombs - and Indonesia right now. How cool is that. Anyway time for bed. Tomorrow we watch the Hitchhiker's Guide I Think.
