progress
My youngest decided that he would rather go Christmas shopping than join me at work today. His first real paycheque ever coinciding with his birthday and Christmas. All he wants to do is make certain everyone receives something nice. He called me around noon to update me on his progress. "I had no idea how expensive buying presents would be". Yes one of life's lessons. Cold hard cash usually runs out long before the heart does for those of an innocent or generous nature and his first paycheque has too. He was still really excited when we arrived home not long ago. Bought his own paper and is wrapping up a storm. All for other people.

Today was a lot more centered at work. All that preparation this month now starting to show results. I could ask our recruiters to start booking in polling day staff for training. My trainer was pleased to hear of it. More new recruits bookd in for training on the computers - that is on Wednesday. One of the supervisors has finally finished his exms for his degree. He was pleased with his efforts and settled happily in to organizing his team. At the end of the evening he came and thanked me for allowing him full expression of his anal tendencies. Freud would be so proud of us "devil in the details" type personalities all working together. I spoke to the two people who were targets of the bullies the past few days in the one department. Told them I was very happy and impressed with their work and reminded them that I am their only boss. No one else's opinion matters. They spent the rest of the day working together minus the tension that had been growing between them as they had scrambled to please someone who had no intention of finding anything good about their work. Exiled the one hoarder to the reception desk and basic tasks. She wasn't happy about that but I hope I made my point. No one owns any of the information flowing through their hands. The information belongs jointly to the team and only as a tool to ensure everyone who wants to has all reasonable opportunities to cast their ballot at the end of January. The one young male who worked in the records department with me up to the election call came in to see me today. He agreed to take on one of the more experimental positions we have to fill this time. Community outreach. Getting out the shy or reluctant voters. Introduced him to the one officer I had already. The other one has found that they are too busy right now so the fit was perfect for him. He spent about an hour with us going through the particualrs and I think they will make a very effective team.

I had a lot of calls all day from various of the tech specialists down east. Still some very odd/curious calls where they "realize" midway through a conversation that they have called the "wrong" Electoral District with a concern. Always the next comment is "so what's new?" All are very helpful and seem to want to say more but I don't know what that means. I finally had enough of the games and called the head man with respect to the mobile polls. I hate having the seniors caling me in tears because they aren't getting their notices of election along with every one else. There is no segment of the population that is more passionate about their right to vote. They lived through two world wars. They do not take democracy for granted nor the freedom that comes with it. They more than anyone also perceive it's weaknesses and follies but also treasure it all the moreso because it still works. When I had finally walked him through the problems and the differences between what was being displayed in the software we theoretically share and what he was viewing he actually became alarmed. "ut what if this affects most of the 308 ridings in the country". Well he could be thankful that it was discovered soon enough that it can be fixed I guess. I know from just my own little bit that their workload is going to be incredibly difficult if that is so across the country. When the printer who had first alerted me to the problem called this afternoon I thanked her again for raising what seemed to be a little anomaly to her as a question for me. Might save all those seniors a lot of unnecessary stress.

The final booster today was the delivery of two boxes from the company I was working in before the election was called. All my personal effects from both worksites and presents. I was given an official company mug and one of those realy fancy pens as a goodbye/thank you gift. There had been a gift exchange a week ago Monday in which I had provided a gift. Today one was enclosed for me both from my own Secret Santa as well as from my supervisor. The best chocolate in town from her and a very kind note. Spent a bit of time writing thank you and good by emails to some of the people I enjoyed working with in that records department.

Good work today and so to bed and good night dear diary.
