Change Theory
Well, the day started out with me locking myself out of the bathroom. I always automatically shut the door when I'm done, because the cats think they're dogs too. You know drinking out of the toilet and such - EWWW. Number four son was up wandering around the house at 6 in the am for some reason, so he managed to finally jimmy the lock and we were good to go. Got to work. I found the computer that I had completely powered down the night before had been booted up. I could tell because the mouse was glowing red. Uh huh. Decided I needed coffee before I could function well enough to deal with it. Came back and called the help desk but couldn't remember my login ID. Nothing like being fully flustered first thing in the morning. When I finally consulted my notes from the first day I started I was able to talk with a real person. He just laughed and said that - yes, sometimes when the system is refurbished or new features are uploaded they switch the units on remotely. Fine. Next time please post a note somehow. The lower tech the better. I've worked in offices where other employees accessed their co-workers' computers downloading or sending forbidden material. I wasn't about to even touch the unit until it had been examined by one of the company's tech people. Not with the usage policies holding one responsible for anything done on the unit one is assigned.

Started in working on my primary task. Found something really weird in the descriptor box in the database - nothing at all, nada. Given the class of records it held, that was a concern. Talked with the offsite specialist and she felt the same way. Ordered it in and sent screen shots of the problem to our supervisor. She requested some action and then came by with more new directions. Our specialist from Texas was requesting a search and analysis of some data I had mentioned seeing in my first assessment of their database. Two classes of records triggered head office's interest - could we find everything pertinent and send them a list. No problem. That's now task five and it intertwines with at least two of the other new tasks. Multi-tasking, but it helped find bits of information that might not have been apparent otherwise that filled in some blanks in the other tasks. Some of that information was also weird prompting another visit with our supervisor, just showing her what I had found. Document and add into the weekly report please, so that the appropriate people can be advised. No problem there either. After a day of searching and coding there appear to be over 1000 boxes containing, at least in part, some relevant documents for the Texas specialist's request. The offsite specialist looked quite hopeful - does that mean we can ship that off to head office? Don't know, but we'll see I guess.

Didn't take a lunch break today because I sense I might need to bank some more hours for election work. That isn't going as smoothly. Although everything else is done, I still haven't been able to secure an office and the deadline is looming. Sent an email to the number two in command at head office explaining the problem and giving him three options of action I can take to fulfill my role. Not certain how that will play out. The pc that EC has supplied me with crashed tonight when I was trying to update more of the database. No surprise. It's the software they locked us out of the system all weekend to "fix". Yuh huh. Guess I try again tomorrow. Right dear diary? I'm just going to print off some time sheets for my new placement and go to bed. Tomorrow will be better, I hope.
