Refereeing
Quiet day today with not a lot to report. I spent a lot of time yesterday revamping the personnel intake form I've created. It was my intention that this would be the only form with a worker's information on it and I intend to maintain it only electronically. The recruitment officer and the team that work with them will be responsible for the intake interviews. The financial officer would be the only other person have unlimited access to that information. The workers will be told that they have to bring their void cheques the first time they come to the office, and no one will be allowed to take their oath of office before all their information was complete.

The primary reason for this is the stringent new Federal legislation that came into effect on January first that governs the collection of personal information. The other issue is completeness, legibility, and consistency of the information gathered and the time spent collecting, consolidating, and transcribing it. After the last two elections, it was one of the areas that was very labour intensive with no funds to cover the time of a person doing the work. I have the final lists that were printed off for me last time with respect to payroll. Those will be given to the recruitment team so that they can call the workers who were "keepers" first.

The form right now is a living document and I am getting input from other people too. Today there was a flurry of e-mail responses. I'll integrate those ideas with the other changes that are being added into the final form. Some people might see this as a minor issue, but the efficiencies in terms of time, accuracy and security of the information are critical to my work.

Talked with some of the other Returning Officers the past couple of days. Still a lot of fallout and hard feelings around the person who caused so much trouble the past few weeks. Apparently, one of the senior people at head office has been calling most of the other Returning Officers and grilling them about their concerns. Some of them are very upset and talking about the labour laws that are at issue. Don't know where this is going to go. There is an overwhelming amount of work to complete as it is and this extra stress is very wearing. So is the loss of trust and confidence in the people we are dependent on - head office - once the writ is dropped. What to do?

On a positive note number four son started a new job - training yesterday and working today. He just came home and he sounds very pleased with life in general. He didn't even seem to mind that he'd missed his Thursday billiard league. Less h appiness over the hockey playoffs though. Our team is in them for the first time in a few years - I think. I don't pay much attention other than to be pleased when the televison schedule goes back to normal. The rivalry between fans from our city and thsoe in Vancouver has already gotten out of hand though. One Calgary fan was beaten after the game last night in BC, and there have been some really ignorant letters to the editor sent to local newspapers in both cities. There were some really good satirical ones too and I wish the papers would stick to printing those rather than waste space on the inflammatory drivel. Some peope don't need any extra encouragement to behave like idiots. I know that's the Mom talking, but what's wrong with that.
