2:15 a.m. - 2003-08-07 I guess I'm not the only one struggling with breathing problems these days. One of the anchor persons on a local channel kept losing her voice and coughing during the news tonight. Another aspect of the forest fire problem is the concern about the animals caught up in the blaze and their chances for survival. An example is a herd of about 200 wild horses in northern BC. They are rare, in that they are descendents of the first horses brought to North America by the Spanish several hundred years ago. The herd has vanished. They are likely safe now, but there is fear that they will be decimated over the winter. A lot of other species are just out of the endangered list - like grizzly bears - and this may put their populations back at risk. What's really frustrating is that half the fires were started by humans and there are still people camping and ignoring the fire bans. The devastation being caused was entirely preventable, but for someone's carelessness. Got the cleaning caught up today and picked up all the paper I had spread out across the living and dining room while doing my election assignment. I started out this project with half of a small box of paperwork that was mostly statistical data. By the time I was finished packing everything up this afternoon, there were two and some boxes full of material and several map tubes of data. Paperless society - maybe the next time Mars cozies up to our planet. |
