2:38 a.m. - 2003-08-04 Anyway on to happier things. Heritage Day here kicks off a month of celebrating our roots in Calgary. This weekend we had the running of the bulls in Strathmore(no one got hurt), the Festival of the Nile (belly dancing and drumming) and the Dragon Boat races. Next up will be pioneer days in several venues over the month, A Taste of Calgary which features food from around the world, Afrikaday, the Highland Games, the Latino/a Celebration, and to finish it off - the International Fireworks Festival, www.globalfest.ca, which features a competition between Canada, Mexico, and the US for primacy in the best fireworks. Next year we might even let the Asian countries play. Musically there are the blues and roots, countryfest, and bluegrass weekends all around the town. Big news is still all the Forest fires, our neighbour province to the west - British Columbia - has declared a state of emergency, seeing the worst firestorms they've had in 50 years. They are talking with the state of Washington about sharing resources since fire surrounds them too. I can complain about not being able to breathe but I'm certain I don't feel as bad as the people watching the walls of flames encircle their homes in the southwest corners of our province. The winds through the mountain passes there are both unpredictable and powerful channeled as they are through the small gap between mountains. A lot of help being sent from the eastern part of Canada as well as from some of the military stationed here About all that will really help though is a good soaking rain - none in the forecast. Reza por lluvia, por favor. |
