September Showers
I put pantyhose on for the first time in six months this morning. I believe that the same person who invented neckties for men invented pantyhose for the same purpose - to make the wearer as uncomfortable as possible. However, pantyhose do keep one's legs warm in colder climates.

It was about 30 degrees fahrenheit/0 degrees celsius last night. That meant drivers scraping frost off their windshields this morning so that they could see to drive. The leaves on the trees went from green to gold and flame all in one night. Not quite a "killing frost" yet, but enough to make me look for my snow boots - just in case.

It was raining downtown when we arrived at about 7 and it stayed that way all day. Sleet sometimes, but only in short bursts. Umbrellas were the fashion statement of the day. A lot of flowers were still bright and blooming in spite of the cold snap. Often we get a long stretch of Indian Summer in October - flowers at the end of September are a good sign.

The city is ringed on the west by the Rockie Mountains - about 60 miles distant. They are now capped with snow. The skiers among us are developing a twitch. It's time for them to wax the skis and get their boots and poles out. There won't likely be snow cover deep enough for schussing for another month or so. We do have some resorts that manufacture their own snow so the keeners will be able to work on their snow tans soon.

Weather is so variable at this time of year that it can be 30 degrees F/0 degrees C in the morning then 70 degrees F/20 degrees C by lunch time. The trick is to dress in layers. That way you can add or remove, discretely of course, whatever you need to stay comfortable. Regardless of the temperature, this city has the highest amount of "sunshine hours" per year. Makes looking on the bright side easier somehow.
